The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has tasked youth corps members to engage in sensitization campaigns on prudent use of mobile data to minimize misuse or exploitation of telecom subscribers in the country.

The Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau of the commission, Mrs Freda Bruce-Bennett made the call in separate speeches delivered to corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Paiko, Niger State, and the Dan-Yamusa Permanent Orientation camp in Nasarawa State.

Highlighting consumer concerns over data depletion which affects the quality of experience and overall consumer satisfaction, Mrs. Bruce-Bennett urged corps members to spread awareness on consumer rights to family, friends and local communities.

She said the youthsl corps members should serve as consumer protection champions by given feedback on consumer challenges to NCC and educating them on NCC's tips on ways to use mobile data efficiently.

The NCC Director of Consumer Affairs Bureau outline some tips on ways to optimize mobile data which include regular monitoring of data usage, utilizing available Wi-Fi networks, turning off automatic updates, restricting background data usage, and downloading content for offline use.

Others are disabling location services, using data saving mode, data storage, and data roll-over which prevents the expiration of unused data.

She also listed some measures being taken by NCC to address consumer concerns on data depletion, including consumer education and sensitization campaigns as well as the promotion of data usage transparency by telecom service providers.

"While the commission has championed a study on this issue, it has also taken proactive steps by conducting consumer education and sensitization campaigns such as the one we are having in NYSC orientation camps.

"We also engage in promotion of data usage transparency initiatives, enforcement of fair usage policies, and ongoing engagement with service providers to enhance the overall Quality of Experience in the industry.

"It is equally important for telecom subscribers to be equipped with the knowledge of how to monitor, control, and optimize the usage of their mobile data bundle allowance, be it daily, weekly, or monthly plans.

"NCC has an unwavering commitment to creating a telecom environment that is fair, competitive, inclusive, and consumer friendly", she said.
